Understanding the Different Types of Notebooks
In the world of laptops, there are a few different types you’re likely to encounter, and each has its own purpose.
The basics types are the desktop replacement, bargain, ultra portable, tablet and gaming.
The desktop replacement is just like it sounds – designed to replace a desktop computer. Usually they’re large, fast, heavy, and tend to have poor battery life. Although they’re portable, they’re rather heavy if you’re going to be moving it around frequently. However, if you’ll mostly be using your laptop in just your house or office, and only occasionally need to travel with it, then this is a good choice.
The bargain laptop is built to be cheap. It’s unlikely you’ll find many bells and whistles on such a computer – even wireless will likely be extra. These computers tend to be smaller than desktop replacements, but still heavy. The battery life is usually mediocre as well. These computers tend to be best suited to people who don’t need to do anything beyond surfing the Internet and using a word processor.
The ultra portable notebook is what you need if you’re going to be traveling frequently. These laptops are frequently small, light, have long battery life, but still have a good amount of processing power. The only drawback to one of these machines is the price as they tend to be on the higher end of the price scale. But if you need a truly portable notebook, then this is the best choice for you.
The tablet notebook is a special kind of computer that comes with a stylus like a PDA and the screen can be written on directly. On these computers, the display actually swivels, so that you can hold the computer and write on it just like it was a pad of paper. These computers tend to be very light as they’re designed to be transported and held, and the battery life tends to be good. They’re usually comparable to the ultra-portables in features, but are more expensive.
The last type of notebook is the gaming notebook. These are the fastest laptops available. Designed to play the latest games, these machines rival the any good desktop. These machines are much like the desktop replacements – but faster, and with better video cards. If you’re going to be playing games, and need a notebook, then this is what you’ll need. The main drawback of gaming notebooks is that they tend to be heavy, have poor battery life, and are usually quite expensive.
